Small Orders Deserve Serious Suppliers: What Velo3D, SpaceX, Anduril and Laser Tube Cutting Taught a Buyer

A small order is not a license to give a small reply.

That sentence has made more than one vendor meeting awkward, but I stand by it. I’m not talking about free samples or endless “just a quick question” calls. I’m talking about purchase orders for real prototype parts, paid on time, with defined specifications.

I’m an office administrator for an 80-person product development company. I manage outside manufacturing services—roughly $300,000 a year across about 25 vendors—and I report to both operations and finance. Many of our metal orders are under $2,000. I now ask three questions before placing a small order. Is your quote valid for thirty days? Does the price include a material certificate or conformance report? Which inspection data will I receive with the parts? The suppliers who answer clearly, in writing, are the ones I reorder from. This is not bureaucracy. It is alignment.

I do not object to minimum order quantities. If a shop tells me, “The minimum run for that tube frame is $1,500; below that, setup cost does not work,” I can make a decision. If it tells me, “We’ll get back to you” and then disappears, the issue is not order size. It is communication.

Good suppliers understand the difference between inexpensive and unimportant. A small order might be the audition for a larger production release. Even if it never grows, it still represents someone’s engineering time, someone’s budget, and someone’s trust.

Small Order Doesn’t Mean Small Standards
